effects of thiamethoxam on feeding and tunneling activities of the termite microcerotermes diversus silvestri (isoptera: termitidae) under laboratory conditions

abstract
abstract treating soil with insecticides is thought to be an effective method for termite control. speed of action and repellency of insecticides are important factors for discussing their barrier effects as soil-treatment termiticide. microcerotermes diversus (silvestri) is the most economically destructive termite in structures in ahwaz region, because the species feed on anything with cellulose. m. diversus live in subterranean nests and access to buildings and plants through subterranean galleries. the chemical barrier effect of thiamethoxam against m. diversus was evaluated under the laboratory using glass tube and plastic container methods. the concentrations used ranged from 5 to 5000 ppm. soil treated with >50 ppm of thiamthoxam had a barrier effect and could stop the penetration of termite within 7days. thiamethoxam did not act as a repellent, as indicated by a gradual increase in mortality at >50 ppm with slight penetration, tunneling area and feeding activity into the treated soil during the 7-day trial. the results suggest that thiamethoxam is an effective termiticide, a suitable barrier for soil treatment, that also acts as a non-repellent, inhibitive entry of termites into treated soil.

effects of boric acid treated soil on mortality, feeding and tunneling of microcerotermes diversus silvestri (isoptera: termitidae) in laboratory trials
microcerotermes diversus silvestri is the most economically destructive termite in structures in ahvaz (iran), and it consumes almost anything containing cellulose. this species lives in subterranean nests and gains access to buildings and vegetation by constructing underground galleries. because of their insecticidal activity, boron compounds may be beneficial for treating soil to create insec...
full texttoxicity of imidacloprid bait to microcerotermes diversus (silvestri) (isoptera: termitidae) under laboratory conditions
microcerotermes diversus (silvestri) is a major pest of buildings and a wide variety of crops and trees in khouzestan province, because of consuming on materials containing cellulose. one new environmentally safe tactic for the control of subterranean termites is baiting world-wide. in laboratory bioassays, toxicity of imidacloprid bait at concentrations of 25, 50 and 100 ppm, was evaluated und...

the use of wood preservatives is a suitable method to protect wooden products from termites attack. the effect of a glycol borate wood preservative and termiticide (available commercially as bora-care) alone and in combination with furfural were evaluated against m. diversus silvestri (isoptera: termitidae). the major termite pest in khouzestan province, iran in choice and no-choice tests. it w...
full textintraspecific aggressive behavior of the subterranean termite microcerotermes diversus silvestri (isoptera: termitidae)
microcerotermes diversus is an extremely destructive structural wood pest in khuzestan province, southwest iran. a better understanding of basic termite ecology is necessary in order to search for alternative termite control methods. the aim of this study was to investigate intraspecific aggressive behaviors among four colonies of the subterranean termite, m. diversus collected from two differe...
full textLaboratory Evaluation of Flurox, a Chitin Synthesis Inhibitor, on the Termite, Microcerotermes diversus
Microcerotermes diversus (Silvestri) (Isoptera: Termitidae) is the most economically destructive termite in structures in southwest Iran. One sustainable control strategy that usually helps to reduce subterranean termite damage in buildings, is the use of insect growth regualtors in a suitable bait matrix that are safe to the user and the environment. In the laboratory assays described here, th...
